In 2020, my financial life was cluttered, chaotic, and heavy. I was living paycheck to paycheck, juggling overdraft fees, dodging calls from collectors, and feeling the constant pressure of not having enough. My mindset was overwhelmed, my bank account was exhausted, and my spirit was discouraged.

But everything shifted when a mentor said something that pierced straight through my frustration:

“If you want more prosperity, you must learn to be a good steward of what you already have.”

That sentence changed my life. It forced me to reorganize my mindset, soften the internal pressure, and align my financial habits with God’s principles. And within one year, everything began to transform.

Today, I want to share the 3 essential lessons that helped me build wealth — starting from just $117 in the bank — and how you can begin your own journey toward financial clarity and abundance.

Lesson 1: Prosperity Begins With Stewardship

Before anything changed in my bank account, something had to change in my heart.

My mentor reminded me that stewardship is not about how much you have — it’s about how you manage what’s already in your hands. That meant I had to stop waiting for “more money” and start honoring the money I already had.

What Is Tithing?

Tithing is the biblical principle of giving the first 10% of your income back to God. It’s an act of trust, obedience, and alignment. It’s saying:

“Lord, You are my source — not my job, not my bank account, not my circumstances.”

Scripture teaches this clearly:

“Honor Yahweh with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your increase.” — Proverbs 3:9

When I began tithing consistently, something shifted. Not magically — but spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. I felt grounded. I felt responsible. I felt aligned.

And alignment opens doors that hustle alone never can.

Lesson 2: Build a System That Works for Your Life

Once I committed to stewardship, I needed a system — something simple, doable, and realistic for where I was.

One day, while praying for direction, I stumbled across a mortgage broker’s YouTube video. She explained what banks look for when approving someone for real estate, and she introduced a budgeting system that changed everything.

She used the 50/30/20 method, but I adapted it to fit my life and my goals:

My 60/10/10/10/10 System

  • 10% Tithing

  • 10% Spending

  • 10% Savings

  • 10% Investing

  • 60% Living expenses & bills

At the time, saving even $200 felt impossible — especially with only $117 in my account. But the moment I set the goal and created a system, something powerful happened:

I stopped reacting to my money and started directing it.

Within a few months, my living expenses dropped from 60% to about 32%, and the extra money flowed into savings and investments. Not because I made more — but because I managed better.

Lesson 3: Small, Consistent Steps Create Big Transformation

The biggest myth about wealth-building is that you need a big income to start.

You don’t.

You need:

  • A clear goal

  • A simple system

  • A willingness to start small

When I began, I wasn’t trying to become wealthy. I was trying to breathe. I was trying to stop the phone calls. I was trying to feel peace again.

But those small steps — $10 here, $20 there — built discipline. Discipline built confidence. Confidence built momentum. And momentum built wealth.

You don’t need perfection. You need consistency.

Your Beginner-Friendly Step: Create Your Personal Financial Flow

Here’s a simple step you can take today to begin reorganizing your finances:

Step: Create a “Financial Flow Snapshot”

This is a one-page overview of:

  • What’s coming in

  • What’s going out

  • What you want to change

Then choose ONE small shift you can make this week — not ten, not five, just one.

Examples:

  • Save your first $25

  • Tithe consistently

  • Reduce one bill

  • Set up automatic transfers

  • Track your spending for 7 days

This is where you become the hero of your financial story — not by doing everything at once, but by taking one faithful step at a time.
