Faith Before Decluttering
Have you ever walked into your home, looked at a pile of mail or a cluttered counter, and felt your spirit immediately drop? You are not alone. In a world that is constantly changing, maintaining peace is essential, but often our physical environments work against us.
For over 30 years, I have observed a simple truth: confusion breeds negativity and doubt.
We often view organization as a chore or a personality trait, but I challenge you to look at it through a spiritual lens. True organization starts not with a storage bin, but with a renewal of the mind.
God is Not the Author of Confusion
The Bible speaks clearly about the connection between our spiritual steadfastness and the orderliness of our lives. Look at Colossians 2:5 (NIV):
"For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is."
The Apostle Paul strongly indicates here that God delights in order. Why? Because God is not the author of confusion. When our lives are chaotic, it becomes difficult to hear His voice or walk in the firmness of faith He desires for us.
What Your Environment Says About You
You may disagree, but hear me out: Your environment tells people who you are.
Whether it is your car, your office, your email inbox, or your living room, these spaces reflect your internal state.
Is your inbox overflowing with thousands of unread messages?
is your car filled with items that don't belong there?
Is your home a place of rest or a source of stress?
If you have clutter, it is likely the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see before bed. This constant visual noise creates a subconscious loop of "undone" tasks.
Furthermore, clutter hits our self-esteem hard. Have you ever had someone jump in your car or stop by your office, and the first thing you did was apologize for the mess? That apology is a withdrawal from your confidence bank. Reclaiming your space is about stopping the apology and stepping into the dignity of a well-ordered life.
The Process of Renewing the Mind
It is important to remember that grace is required for this journey. The clutter—whether physical items, anxious thoughts, or digital files—didn’t get there overnight. Therefore, it won't disappear in a day.
Since it took time to accumulate, it will naturally take time to become reorganized.
By the renewing of your mind daily (Romans 12:2), God points out different things you need to work on. He rarely shows us the whole mountain at once; He shows us the next step. This mental reorganization is the prerequisite to physical decluttering. When your mind is aligned with God’s peace, the physical order follows naturally.
One Simple Way to Start
If you are overwhelmed and don't know where to begin, do not look at Pinterest or a magazine. Look to God.
Here is a simple, transformative exercise you can do today:
Stop and Sit: Find a quiet moment.
Ask: simply pray, "God, show me the ONE area you want me to bring order to today."
Listen and Act: He might direct you to a single junk drawer, your purse, or perhaps a specific relationship that needs boundaries.
Obey: Do that one thing. Do not worry about the rest of the house.
God will direct your steps. When you invite Him into the process, decluttering stops being a chore and becomes an act of worship and obedience.
