What Motivates You?

What motivates you?

According to Alfred Adler's (a well known psychotherapist) theory on personality, there is an underlying force that motivates us all. Whether it is food, money, love, sex, family, or for many - success, something motivates us all to take action. However, what truly motivates you?

Motivation comes in many forms and is inspired by your mindset. It is either intrinsic (internal) or extrinsic (external). This is an interesting question to ask yourself, your significant other, friends, co-workers, and relatives. If you are unsure of what motivates you, ask yourself, "what am I good at, or what could I improve upon?" These questions can jump start your motivation process.

There is one important component to getting motivated. That component is, making a decision.  If you want to be in a relationship and become motivated to start working out, then you have made a decision to be in a relationship. If you hate the job that you are in, and start looking for new work, then you have made the decision to change your circumstances by seeking new employment.

Years ago, I had a job that I began to despise. On Friday's I was full of energy, and was motivated by go back home as soon as I left the house for work. Getting up in the morning was rough, especially Monday's through Thursday's. I did not enjoy life and had no motivation to be in that environment. It was a vicious cycle to get up and go to work. This simple task of getting up, getting dressed, and driving to work became challenging day by day.

On Sunday evenings I couldn't sleep. I would stay up until 2am dreading the next morning. I would also spend wasteful time thinking of many reasons why I should call in sick. I literally became ill at the thought of going to work until it hit me one day. I needed to find what motivated me, and more importantly, I needed to make a decision. If something in life is making you completely miserable, then it may be time to do some soul searching to find out where it is that you need to be.

I made a decision to leave and seek another venture.  I decided to live life, open a new business, and work on mastering my talent.    The moment I made a decision, I felt relieved and became excited. As I began working on my new business, I started enjoying life again. Life seemed to change almost instantaneously. I wasn't bogged down with negative thoughts. I was uplifted and felt victorious. I finally changed my mindset and it changed my whole perspective on life. I no longer felt trapped and inundated. I had unlocked to key to what motivated me to succeed and work toward a more fulfilling life.

Motivation is different for everyone. Whether it is to loose weight, by a home, or become financially successful, it all starts with a decision. If you are unsure of where to start, ask the Lord to guide you first. In Proverbs 2:6 reads, the Lord gives wisdom. So, why not seek advice from HIM and not the average acquaintance who may not have your best interest at heart. It also reads, from HIS mouth comes knowledge and understanding. There is no doubt that when you seek this route, an answer will come. Once you have received your answer, it your decision whether to act or lay back and wait for something to happen.

*Remember, motivation is something that should positively benefit you and thus positively benefit those around you as well.
